Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee – Fine Young Cannibals (Fortuna Pop!)
For some time, after just assuming Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee weren’t particularly going to release anything special, PM had ignored them. On the strength of this single, it seems that PM was entirely wrong, because Fine Young Cannibals is a gorgeous, warm song. A plea that anyone in a relationship will surely have made, for the other half to join the narrator in bunking work for the day, is the basis here and it’s success comes in the way that David Tattersall (of The Wave Pictures) doesn’t make too much of it. He’ll occasionally nag the seventh of the chord, the violin will bob underneath sweetly and the guitar solo will weave like a cute child at a family barbeque, but it’s never too much fuss. It’s not bluegrass as they bill themselves, but it’s still forlorn and terrific.
The flip from Darren Hayman, That’s Why She Left Me is also excellent, if even simpler in its randiness. Again, those in a relationship will understand completely Hayman’s frustration and obsession with the hipbone, and his usual quirks pervade. I once interviewed him in a toilet, no joke. It was great.
